The Best RC Gifts at Every Budget — A Hobby Shop Owner's Honest Guide
Christmas, birthdays, Father's Day, graduation — I've helped thousands of people pick RC gifts over 30 years in the hobby shop. Whether you're buying for a kid who's never touched an RC car or a dad who's been in the hobby for decades, I've got you covered at every price point.
Under $50 — Small But Meaningful
You're not buying a truck at this price, but you can get accessories that any RC enthusiast will actually use:
LiPo battery ($40-$60). Every RC driver wants more runtime. A second battery is the gift that keeps giving — literally doubles their driving time. If you know what truck they have, we can match the right battery.
Blue Loctite + tire glue combo ($15). Sounds boring. Every hobbyist needs it. It's the RC equivalent of getting someone really good socks — they'll use it constantly and appreciate it more than you'd expect.
LED light kit ($20-$40). Light bars and underglow kits make any truck look incredible for night driving. Fun, easy to install, and makes the truck feel brand new.

$50-$150 — Upgrades That Matter
Quality charger ($60-$120). Most RTR trucks come with a basic charger that takes forever. A real charger like a Spektrum Smart charges faster, has storage mode, and treats batteries better. This is the upgrade nobody buys themselves but everybody wants.
Upgraded servo ($50-$100). Faster steering response makes any truck feel more alive. Brands like Spektrum, Savox, and Reef RC (especially for crawlers — those brass ones are gorgeous) make excellent options.
Battery + charger combo ($100-$150). The ultimate practical gift. A good LiPo and a smart charger together means they're fully set up for maximum fun time.
$200-$350 — Their First Real RC Truck
This is the sweet spot for getting someone INTO the hobby. A real, hobby-grade truck that's ready to run right out of the box:
ARRMA GRANITE MEGA 4X4 — $219.99. The perfect first truck for almost anyone. Brushed 4WD monster truck, tough as nails, and every part is replaceable. This is what I put most beginners in.
ARRMA GRANITE 4X4 3S BLX — $339.99. If they're a teenager or adult who wants more speed, the brushless version is incredible. Faster, more powerful, and still built like a tank.
Axial SCX10 III Base Camp — $339.99. For the person who'd rather go slow and technical. Rock crawling is addictive, the scale detail is beautiful, and this truck is a gateway to a whole different side of the hobby.
$350-$600 — The Serious Enthusiast
ARRMA KRATON 6S — $549.99. This is the dream truck for someone who's been in the hobby. 1/8 scale, 6S brushless power, capable of 60+ mph. It's the "if you could have any truck" truck.
Truck + battery + charger bundle. Buy them a truck in the $200-$350 range AND a quality battery and charger. They open the box and they're completely ready to go — no extra purchases needed. That's a gift that shows you thought it through.
The Gift Card Option (No Shame in It)
If you have no idea what they want or what they already have — a hobby shop gift card is the right call. Seriously. RC people are picky about their stuff (in a good way), and they'll be thrilled to pick out exactly what they want.
Better yet: give them the gift card and offer to go to the shop WITH them. Make it an experience, not just a transaction.
Pro Tips From Behind the Counter
Don't buy RC trucks from toy stores or Amazon. The $40 "RC car" from the toy aisle is not the same thing as a hobby-grade vehicle. It'll break immediately and turn someone off the hobby. Come to a real hobby shop.
RTR means Ready to Run. Look for this on the box. It means everything they need is included (truck, radio, ESC, motor). They'll just need a battery and charger — and some RTR trucks include those too.
When in doubt, call the shop. Tell us who you're buying for, their age, their experience level, and your budget. We'll pick the perfect thing. That's literally what we do every day.
