Flying RC Planes at the Beach Is One of the Best Experiences in the Hobby
If you didn't know — RC planes at the beach are awesome. I'm talking sunset low passes over the sand dunes, high-speed taxi runs along the surf with the suspension soaking up the bumps, nailing the flaps and coming in for a smooth beach landing. If you know, you know. It's one of those experiences that just hits different.
I'm the hobby dude, man. I've been doing RC since I was five years old — I'm 46 now and I've worked in hobby shops for 30 years. I always try to incorporate RC into my days, and the beach is our spot. The night before a beach day, we'll charge up the speaker, charge up all the RC car batteries, the plane batteries — and if we're really prepared, we'll get everything lined up by the back door and try to make a whole day out of it. My wife loves flying kites out there too, so between the kites, the cars, and the planes, it's a full RC day at the beach.
My Two Favorite Beach Planes
The two favorites I like to take to the beach are the E-flite Timber — the white and green one, about 1.3 meters — and the HobbyZone Aero Scout.
The E-flite Timber
That Timber has shock-absorbing landing gear, and let me tell you — it is so cool to see that plane going along the sand at high-speed taxi with the tail up, just soaking up the bumps. You can actually see the suspension working on it. It's awesome.
And that thing has those big flaps, so you can come into land and just nail 'em. Flying an RC plane on the beach when the sun is going down, right above the sand dunes, doing low passes over the water — it's amazing. It's just one of those things where if you know, you know.
The HobbyZone Aero Scout
The Aero Scout was the first one I brought out there. That thing looks kinda silly, but it flies amazing. One of the most versatile, fun planes from rookies to experts — it's amazing. More fun than you would think. No really, don't compromise on this one.
"Put it on your computer radio and jack up the control throws. Grab a chair, take a seat, and have some good ole FUN. The Aero Scout is honestly more of a burner than you'd expect — from beginners to experienced guys, it's a blast." — Matt, RC Hobby Pros
If you ever want to get anybody started in the hobby, the Aero Scout is as good or better than the Apprentice. They're both the right choice, but you may look at the Aero Scout and not realize how awesome it really is. Don't sleep on it.
Beach Flying Tips
You gotta be smart about it. I'm not endorsing anything here — FAA rules are FAA rules — but when it's not real crowded and you've got a nice open stretch of beach, there's nothing like it.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Be honest about your skill level — if you can't fly well, don't bring your plane to the beach and fly it around people. If you're good, you know the deal.
- Always consider other people — be safe, be aware, pick your moments
- Wind off the water can be tricky — the beach has its own wind patterns, so be ready for gusts
- Planes with big tires or shock-absorbing gear are ideal for sand takeoffs and landings — the Timber is perfect for this
- Charge everything the night before — you want maximum flight time when conditions are right
There's Nothing Like It
I say it all the time — flying an RC plane at the beach when the sun is going down is one of the best experiences in the hobby. Low passes on the water, cruising along the dunes, that golden hour light. It's one of those things that makes you remember why you got into this in the first place.
I've been at this since I was a little kid, and after 41 years in the hobby and 30 years working in shops, I can tell you — beach flying never gets old. So if you've never tried it, this summer might be the time. Grab a Timber or an Aero Scout, charge up those batteries, and make a day of it.
