Best Beginner RC Cars — What to Buy When You're Just Getting Started
I've been in the RC hobby since I was five years old. I'm 46 now, and I've worked in hobby shops for 30 years. If there's one question I've heard more than any other, it's this: "What's a good RC car for a beginner?"
It's the best question you can ask. And I'm going to give you an honest answer — not a sales pitch, not a top-10 list pulled off Amazon. This is real advice from someone who's watched thousands of people walk into a hobby shop for the first time and helped them walk out with something they're going to love.
First Things First — RTR Is Your Friend
If you're brand new, you want something that's RTR — Ready to Run. That means everything you need is in the box. The truck, the controller, the battery — you charge it up and you're driving. No soldering, no building, no guessing. Just rip it open and go.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with starting RTR. Some of the best drivers I know started that way. You can always upgrade parts later once you know what you like. The important thing is getting something in your hands and driving.
"Everybody wants to overthink it. Just get something, charge it, and go outside. That first moment when you hit the throttle and the truck takes off — that's when it clicks. That's when you become an RC person." — Matt, RC Hobby Pros
The ARRMA GRANITE MEGA — My #1 Recommendation for New Drivers
If someone walks into my shop and says "I want my first RC car," nine times out of ten I'm putting an ARRMA GRANITE MEGA 4X4 in their hands. Here's why:
It's a full 4-wheel-drive monster truck. It's tough as nails — and I mean that. New drivers are going to hit stuff. They're going to clip curbs, plow into fences, roll it down a hill. The GRANITE takes all of that and keeps going. ARRMA builds these things like tanks.
The MEGA 665 brushed motor gives you plenty of speed to have a blast without being so fast that you can't control it. That's the sweet spot for beginners — enough power to grin, not enough to get in trouble. And it runs on a NiMH battery, which is simpler and safer than jumping straight into LiPo.
At $219.99, it's one of the best values in all of RC. Period.

Want More Speed? Step Up to Brushless
If you've got a little more budget or you know you're going to want more power down the road, the ARRMA GRANITE 223S Brushless at $339.99 is the next step up. Same bulletproof platform, but now you've got a brushless motor system that delivers significantly more speed and torque. Plus DSC (Dynamic Steering Control) helps keep it planted when you're pushing hard.
The brushless GRANITE is the truck that turns beginners into addicts. I've seen it happen hundreds of times. Someone comes in for "just a fun toy" and three months later they're buying upgrade parts and talking about gear ratios. That's the hobby pulling you in — and it starts with a truck like this.

What About Crawlers?
Not everybody wants speed. Some people want to take it slow, pick a line through the rocks, and enjoy the technical side of driving. If that sounds like you — or if you think it might — a rock crawler is one of the most rewarding ways to get into RC.
My pick: the Axial SCX10 III Base Camp. It's RTR, it's got portal axles for insane ground clearance, and the scale-realistic body looks absolutely incredible on the trail. Crawling is a whole different world from bashing — it's slower, more deliberate, more about skill than speed. And once you get into it, you'll be hooked.
We carry it in both white ($339.99) and gray ($339.99). Both look fantastic.

Short Course Trucks — The Underrated Pick
Here's one a lot of beginners don't think about: short course trucks. These are modeled after the full-size trucks you see in off-road desert racing. They're lower and wider than a monster truck, which makes them more stable and easier to control — but they still rip.
The ARRMA FURY 223S at $249.99 is a brushless 2WD short course truck that's an absolute riot to drive. The 2WD layout gives you that tail-happy, slidey feel that's just pure fun. It teaches you real driving skills too — throttle control, weight transfer, how to catch a slide. And it looks sick in that purple colorway.
What NOT to Buy as a Beginner
I'm going to be straight with you because that's how we do it at RC Hobby Pros. Here's what I tell people to avoid when they're starting out:
Don't start with a 6S truck. Those are 1/8-scale beasts that do 50+ mph. They are awesome — but they are not beginner vehicles. You will break it on day one and spend more fixing it than you spent buying it. Work your way up.
Don't buy the cheapest thing on Amazon. I know it's tempting. But those $60 RC cars use proprietary parts that can't be replaced. When something breaks — and it will — the whole thing goes in the trash. A quality hobby-grade RC from ARRMA, Axial, or Losi uses standard parts that you can get anywhere, and the truck will last for years.
Don't skip the hobby shop. Come in, talk to us, hold the trucks in your hands. We'll help you pick the right one for your budget and your style. That's what we're here for. We're not going to upsell you on something you don't need — we want you in the hobby for the long haul.
"The biggest mistake I see is people going too big too fast. Get something you can learn on, beat on, and grow with. The speed will come — trust me. After 41 years in this hobby, I promise you the best part isn't how fast it goes. It's the moment it all clicks and you realize this is YOUR thing." — Matt, RC Hobby Pros
