RC Maintenance 101: Keeping Your Buggy Running All Summer

Matt Keller |

Summer is the best time to run RC cars. The weather is right, the ground is dry, and bash sessions can go on for hours. But all that running puts wear on your buggy in a hurry. If you want to keep your car in top shape from Memorial Day through Labor Day without a surprise breakdown mid-session, you need a simple maintenance routine. Here's one that actually works.

After Every Run: Clean It

Dirt and debris in the drivetrain is the number one killer of RC buggies. After every bash session, blow out the chassis with compressed air or a can of electronics duster, check the wheel wells for packed debris, and wipe down the body. It takes five minutes and dramatically extends the life of your bearings, gears, and motor.

Check Screws Every 5 Runs

Vibration loosens screws. This is just physics. Every five runs, go around the chassis with a proper hex driver and check that nothing has worked itself loose. The Dynite Hex Driver Set, Metric 4-piece ($45.99) covers every common size on most 1/10 and 1/8 scale buggies. The Speed Tip Hex Driver Wrench Set Gen 2 ($48.00) is also excellent — the speed tip design means you can run screws in and out fast without switching grip position.

Don't skip the wheel nuts. Loose wheel nuts are how you lose a wheel at speed, which at 40+ mph can also mean losing the axle or damaging the diff housing on impact.

Check Alignment Regularly

Crashes shift alignment. The RPM Precision Camber Gauge ($9.95) and RPM Toe-In Gauge ($9.95) are inexpensive tools that let you quickly verify your alignment is still dialed in after a hard hit. Out-of-spec alignment causes premature tire wear and makes the car handle unpredictably. Both tools are in stock at RC Hobby Pros and take about two minutes to use.

Tires: Know When to Swap

Worn tires don't just slow you down — they make the car unpredictable on loose surfaces. Run your hand around the tire and look for uneven wear, chunks missing from the tread, or foam inserts that feel crushed rather than springy. We carry a full range of replacement tires for 1/10 and 1/8 scale buggies, including ARRMA-compatible tires like the dBoots Fortress SC Tire Set ($from ~$30+) and dBoots Backflip MT 6S Tire Wheel Set for bigger rigs.

Batteries: Don't Abuse Them

LiPo batteries are the most expensive consumable in RC, and most people destroy them through bad habits. Three rules: never run a pack to zero (stop when the car slows noticeably), never charge a battery that's still warm from running, and store packs at storage voltage (usually around 3.8V per cell) if you're not running for more than a week. We carry battery chargers and storage charge accessories in our charging section.

Keep a Spare Parts Kit

Nothing kills a bash day faster than a broken part you don't have on hand. For any buggy you run regularly, keep spares of: turnbuckles, suspension arms, body clips, and a set of wheel hexes. ARRMA makes this easy with affordable aluminum hex sets like the ARRMA Wheel Hex Aluminum 12mm 4-pack and the ARRMA Wheel Hex Metal 14mm BLX 3S (2-pack) — both in stock and both cheap enough to not think twice about.

Stock Up Before the Season Heats Up

All the tools and parts mentioned in this guide are available at RC Hobby Pros. We carry maintenance tools, replacement parts, tires, batteries, and chargers for most major brands. A small investment in the right tools now means more time running and less time waiting on shipping for parts you should have had on the shelf.
